A History of Client Success
Hansen-Rice, Inc. (HRI) began in 1983 building potato storage facilities and box plants for the corrugated industry. Our founders, Dan Hansen and Ivan Rice, had a mindset for delivering better results for our clients, which meant our clients looked to HRI to develop and execute their building program.
Building the Corrugated Industry
Longview Fibre (now Westrock) was our first customer with over 60 successful box plants projects nationwide.
Revolutionizing Crop Storage
In 1994, seeing a vital need for safety and longevity in the agricultural industry, HRI designed and patented a new Thermo-dynamic Air Envelope for potato storage, revolutionizing the industry.
Hansen-Rice, Inc. went on to build well over 8,000,000 square feet of potato and onion storage by 2010.
Adding Foundational Value
From 1983 to 2010, HRI was primarily known as a design-build general contractor. Our specialty was successfully managing the critical path to deliver fast-tracked projects. More agile than our competitors, HRI focused on compressing critical path schedules while controlling costs. We were (and are) extremely good at it. Our clients succeeded, and we thrived along with them.
Mitigating Frustrations
As we grew with our clients, we observed their frustrations and challenges managing and integrating process equipment packages in an increasingly complex environment. HRI was often called on to make costly “balance of plant” changes to mitigate inherited problems. We recognized that our clients would be better served with a different approach and adapted to their needs accordingly.
Increased Accountability as Consultative Subject Matter Experts
In 2011, HRI began hiring experienced subject matter experts (SMEs) to support the business goals and increasingly complex project objectives for our most successful clients. We quantified our clients’ challenges and identified potential solutions early in the project lifecycle. Staying focused on what worked and where we could add the greatest value, HRI expanded our service offerings to provide consultative engineering by way of Professional Services Agreements.
We also recognized our responsibility to protect our client’s interests along with our own – to mitigate risk, enhance quality, and bring a higher level of accountability to the process from beginning to end. We implemented proven quality management practices based on ISO 9001 (HRI Assured Delivery Program), new safety plans, and comprehensive planning documentation.
Then, as now, we tested assumptions about our methodologies, validated the approach, and worked toward continuous improvement.
The true test of our approach, however, has been validated by the loyalty of our clients, who have repeatedly trusted us with their CAPEX solutions.
